UPDATE ON THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE  -  SIGN THE ACLJ PETITION (See Below)

On February 26, 2009, the U.S. Senate approved the Broadcaster Freedom Amendment which prevents the Federal Communications Commission from reinstating the so-called "Fairness Doctrine". Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) had succeeded in getting the Broadcaster Freedom Amendment attached to the D.C. Voting Rights Act. The Amendment passed by a vote of 87 - 11.

All 6 of the U.S. Senators in the coverage area of your Network of Praise voted in favor of the Broadcaster Freedom Amendment (MONTANA: Baucus - D, Tester - D; WYOMING: Enzi - R, Barrasso - R; IDAHO: Crapo - R, Risch - R).

However, at the same time, the Senate voted 57 - 41 to approve an amendment proposed by Illinois Senator Dick Durbin that seeks to achieve the same goals as the Fairness Doctrine through "backdoor" FCC regulations.

On Senator Durbin's amendment, Montana Senators Baucus and Tester voted in favor of it, while the Senators from Wyoming and Idaho, all Republicans, voted against the amendment.

The House version of the Broadcasters Freedom Act has been added to the upcoming Omnibus Spending Bill. Senator DeMint said, "I hope the Democrat leadership in the House does not block this provision when they consider this legislation".

DeMint also said, "Today's vote slammed the front door on the Fairness Doctrine...an important victory for free speech. But the fight is far from over. Senator Durbin's amendment exposed Democrat intentions to impose radio censorship through the back door...it could apply beyond radio to television, newspapers, and the internet".

Your Network of Praise is committed to doing all that it can do to maintain our rights to freedom of speech. YNOP is one of about 50 ministries nationwide to join the President's Council of the National Religious Broadcasters association. As a member of this special group, YNOP is directly involved in this battle.

YNOP Network General Manager, Roger Lonnquist, said, "the vote in the U.S. Senate was, no doubt, the result of the prayers and efforts of thousands of people across America. We are very encouraged by this, but we remain aware that many key Democrats remain committed to the goals of restricting the free speech rights of Christian and conservative talk radio broadcasters. We believe that this battle will not be ending any time soon, and that we will have to keep after it on an ongoing basis...YNOP will continue to do everything possible to preserve these rights".

A Note from General Manager,
Roger Lonnquist

Dear Friend of YNOP,
Thank you for taking the time to read this info and for signing the petition we have been telling you about on the air.

It is with great concern that I write to you with some basic details about the upcoming efforts of the federal government to place dangerous restraints on our freedom to broadcast the message of Jesus Christ.

At this time it appears that we will, in the near future, face a number of threats to our free speech rights. The first, is the very inappropriately named policy called the "Fairness Doctrine". The Fairness Doctrine would require that, after airing a program, YNOP provide equal time to those with "opposing viewpoints".

This could mean that, after airing a Focus on the Family program which proclaims biblically-based views on marriage, we would have to give groups such as "Queer Nation" equal time on YNOP to express their viewpoints!

If David Jeremiah simply reads John 14:6, in which Jesus proclaims that He is "the way, the truth, and the life...no one comes to the Father except through Me", we would be legally obligated to allow Muslems, Buddhists, atheists, and any others who didn't agree with John14:6 to have equal time on YNOP!

Obeying this pending policy is absolutely unthinkable! Yet, to disobey it would put YNOP in a situation of civil disobedience against our federal government, subject us to stiff financial fines, and would place ALL of our FCC licenses in jeopardy.

As a Christian ministry we seek to respect the authorities over us, and pray that we will never face the decision of whether or not we will obey our government! It is our earnest prayer that the people of America will voice such strong opposition to this and other pending policies harmful to Christian radio & TV, that we will be permitted to continue freely broadcasting the message of Christ as we have been so privileged to for the past 25+ years!

We ask at this time that you click on the link below and add your support to a petition that Jay Sekulow's American Center for Law & Justice is circulating. Your support of this petition is vital at this time!

You can listen to Jay Sekulow LIVE each weekday afternoon just after 1:00 o'clock for more information.

Also, check back to this page on YNOP.org and I will have regular updates on this topic, and let you know of some special steps that Your Network of Praise has already taken, along with some other ministries, to lead the way in the fight against government restriction of our programming. I'll be posting updates every 10 days or so, so please check back often to find out how things are going.

PLEASE PRAY...and help us preserve our freedom of speech rights!

In Christ,
Roger Lonnquist
Network General Manager
